Much more than just a shop, the flamboyant, Belle Époque-inspired interior of Gillian Wesley and the Catwalk Café houses her working design studio, thriving bespoke fashion business, and a selection of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, from quirky handbags and unusual jewellery to lace boots, unique skirts and quality corsets.
The Catwalk Café is a stylish Parisian-style place serving the very best in continental drinks and snacks, all prepared with the same perfectionist ethos that goes into Gillian’s designs. Order a glass of orange juice and it will arrive freshly squeezed from the sweetest Jaffa fruit; choose a croissant, and you can rely on it to be perfectly flaky and delicious; or try the hand-carved ham on home-baked baguette, and you really are in for a treat. In the afternoon, the Catwalk Café serves afternoon tea from exquisite vintage China cups and indulgent, towering marshmallow-and-cream hot-chocolates.
“One advantage of the café,” Gillian says, “is it provides a space for men to relax while their wives are shopping. It was very important to me to create an atmosphere where men could feel comfortable with or without their wives. In the shop itself, our expert staff are always on hand to help husbands choose the perfect gift: from the ultimate luxury and romance of a handmade ready-to-wear corset in the finest couture fabric to a distinctive selection of stylish accessories.”
